Hoodies: What’s all the Hype?
If you have a teenage son or daughter, maybe even a niece or nephew, than you have probably heard the word “hoodie.” I’m sure you also thought to yourself, “ What the heck is a hoodie? ” Believe it or not, you might actually have a hoodie in your closet or dresser. A hoodie is a sweatshirt with a large front pocket, a hood, and usually a drawstring to adjust the fit of the hood around your head. Some hoodies have a zipper, but the most common are the ones that you pull over your head.
Hoodies actually became common sometimes in the 1970′s. You also may have recalled Sylvester Stallone in his grey hoodie in the movie “Rocky.” Even though he wore it so well, it was not Sylvester Stallone who made the hoodie so common. Rappers and hip hop artists originally started wearing hoodies when rapping first came to light.
Unfortunately, over time, hoodies were given a bad rap. Criminals started wearing them when they would go out and commit illegal activities. The over-sized pocket makes hiding drugs, weapons, or other items easy. The hood is also a useful device to help hid their identity by keeping the majority of their face covered.
Hoodies are not specified for one gender or the other, anyone can wear a hoodie. You may have noticed more and more athletes that wear hoodies. Runners and joggers seem to wear them early in the more to act as a barrier from the crisp cold air. You will also see surfers and skateboards choosing their own unique hoodies . Schools, universities, and colleges have been putting logos and mascots on hoodies for years.
