Daring brilliance
Former Rhode Islander Don Winslow has done it again in "Savages." No, check that, because he's actually outdone himself in this blisteringly original tale of two nice-guy marijuana growers who find themselves at odds with Mexico's most powerful drug cartel.
How do our heroes, gun-loving Chon and the more business-oriented Ben, rationalize their actions? Well, "Chon refers to drugs as a 'rational response to insanity,' and his chronic use of the chronic is a chronic response to chronic insanity."
Winslow's prose is so choppy and grammatically acrobatic that in lesser hands it would have obliterated the storytelling. Like his heroes, though, the only rules he plays by are his own, branding him a kind of Hunter Thompson for the fiction world. Not totally gonzo, but close enough. The perfect meshing of style and substance.
Take Chon, for example. An ex-Navy SEAL with plenty of notches in his belt from taking down Taliban in Afghanistan. Typical burned-out thriller hero except for the fact that he's not burned out at all, just smoked up. A lot. Constantly. Until it comes to war with the cartel forces who kidnap his and Ben's mutual girl friend O, short for Ophelia. (In "Savages" everything's short, from the gunfights to the sex scenes to the sentences, paragraphs and chapters, one of which runs a total of two words.)
Thing is Ben and Chon don't just grow pot, they grow the mother of all pot. Making lots of money, enough to buy off drug agents and build a formidable distribution network for their product. So formidable that it runs them afoul of the Baja Cartel under the leadership of Elena Sanchez Lauter. After Ben and Chon reject her initial overtures, Elena's thugs take O hostage with a filmed decapitation in the offing if Ben and Chon don't come to work exclusively for her. Being hired hands doesn't really suit them, so the boys look elsewhere for a response.

Fahrenthold used her considerable speed to round the bases and helped the Islanders win the game against San Diego High School 5-2. Senior Sean Lee has been a stalwart for the Coronado High School Boys Tennis Team this season. Playing No.
