&Mdash; Two years ago, the yellow buoy was hanging as part of a restaurant sign in the coastal community of Minamisanriku in northern Japan when an earthquake triggered a tsunami and washed it - and so much more - out to sea.About a year later, the buoy was found more than 3,000 miles away on a remote Alaska island, discovered by an avid beachcomber who, through sheer coincidence, was later able to find the owner, who had lost her home and business. Hundreds of similar buoys have been found on beaches along the West Coast, a combination of the everyday trash that has plagued coastal areas for years and debris washed away by the March 11, 2011 disaster.
Distinguishing between the two is difficult. Just 21 items from among the more than 1,500 reports of possible tsunami debris have been firmly traced back to the tsunami, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Coast Guard took 23 minutes to reach sinking boat
John Staynor, manager of compliance for Island Tug and Barge, said tugboat operators used their searchlights to spot the fishing boat and the crewmembers in the water. The tugboat operators then prepared to launch a small rigid-hull inflatable boat to rescue the men.
"Before they were able to get their boat in the water, the Coast Guard was there," Staynor said.
Canadian Coast Guard spokesman Dan Bate said the Coast Guard hovercraft arrived minutes after the tugboat.
"There were two people in the water. They had tied rubber fenders from the boat and had lifejackets on. The boat had at that point, disappeared from the water," Bate said.
"A coast guard swimmer was dispatched and brought both men on board the hovercraft where they were treated for hypothermia."

There are 2 indentations for your feet. This is really nice when learning to SUP. Sometimes it’s tough to know where to stand on a surfboard, if you are too far back or forward, the performance can be greatly diminished. It reminds me a little bit of indexing on a kayak paddle. It takes the thought out of getting on and off the board. This the by far the most stable, and user friendly river running SUP that we have tried. It’s wide, predictable and turns very easily. The edges do not catch on eddylines, like they do other SUP’s (it paddles like a creek boat). This is the perfect board for learning to river SUP. It’s also the prefect board to push the limits of downriver SUP travel with. Class II is a breeze, class III is fun, and pretty soon, people will be running some hair with this board. It will be exciting to see what first descents get logged in with the Rapid Fire. When’s Corran going to style the Zambezi??
I weigh 210 lbs, can stand with 90% of my body weight on the side of the board, and not bury the edge. This was awesome for eddy turns. Because the edge does not sink, the Rapid Fire does not flip over as easily as other SUP’s. I was also able to do pivot turns with ease. Instead of feeling like I was going to fall off of the board, I could hop with no noticeable bobble when I went from a surf stance, to the down river paddle stance. Again, this is the perfect SUP to learn the basics of down river paddling. You can then apply these skills to a traditional SUP and getting them dialed in on the Rapid Fire .
