You Ask They Answer

is the hummingbird matrix 97 a good fish finder gps unit for running rivers and lakes?

Aug 29, 2008 by khudo | Posted in Fishing

I've bought a 1990 bayliner 2655 and want a gps unit with depth finder...what is a good recommendation?

It all depends, as usual, on what your willing to spend. The Matrix 97, in my opinion, is one of the finest available, more than enough for most lakes and all rivers as it has a 1500 ft. depth range, 5" color display, full GPS chartplotting with

Cathy Crossland from Bayside  Marina is reporting already it’s going to be a great season that will go down in the record books. The surf is still churning out stripers and now lots of drum have showed up. Low tide seems to be working better. She has a new clam boat and has sworn off pathetic little clams forever. Now if only the bunker would cooperate, she said. On May 10, Crossland saw the first kingfish caught down at the bridge - that's a record. Everyone is bringing in flounder. Ken Attwood had a 6.89-pound flounder that she put in The Press fishing contest.

Offshore, there's yellowfin and bluefin tuna at the Wilmington and Baltimore canyons and makos all over. Crossland has some really nice Baitmaster ballyhoo in and will get Bionic on Friday. Saturday is the 23rd annual Surf-N-Land Tournament. For more information stop in the shop or call.

If you are going to fish the spring run for striped bass, you'd better hurry. Barry Canevaro of Fish Hookers Sportfishing in Isleton said stripers are spawning all along Vieira's Resort on the Old Sacramento. The pace is furious, if not chaotic, as stripers splash on the surface and plunge around.

Canevaro said fishing is so good he makes two trips some days.

The Old Sacramento and the main stem, from Steamboat Slough below Rio Vista along the West Bank, Sandy Beach, Old Dairy, Horseshoe Bend and Collinsville finds schools of bass moving about. For boaters, it means stick-and-move until schools are found.

If you’re looking for some lightning rod globes or a weed eater, you might find it at the Berg Auction Sale Sunday in Halstad, Minn. Or maybe you have a hankering for a Hummingbird fish finder. There’s one listed in the notice of the auction near Argyle, Minn., on Sunday. There’s a Copley guitar, beer signs and Beatles items as well as an old phone on the auction block Sunday at 1501 Cherry St., here in Grand Forks.

It’s amazing what you might find when you scour the fine print in the Want Ads section of the Herald. On Sundays, I browse through them. I noticed that Saturday. a person could find some stoneware crocks and jugs as well as a spinning wheel at an auction of Gordon and Kathy Bernstrom goods at Lancaster, Minn.

What’s that smell?

When I go get my own lobster, though, the mess is epic. We went out yesterday, in a two-foot chop, to pull our pots. The ropes are covered with sea crud, which has to be removed to get a hold on the rope, and most of it lands on the deck. The pots themselves are also grimy and weedy, and when you brace them against your body to hold them steady on the gunwale in a heaving sea, the grime and weeds get all over you. (You’re wearing coveralls, if you’ve thought to bring them.)

Then you have to rebait the bags. First, you dump the bones of the old bait overboard, but a few inevitably find their way onboard. Then you fill the bags with the frozen pieces of bluefish rack from the smelly cooler full of bait. The bait leaves blood and guts on anything it touches, which always includes your gloves and sometimes, your deck and your clothes.

By the time you’ve checked all ten pots, the boat’s a disaster. The deck is cruddy and slippery, your gloves and clothes are stained and wet.

That’s what Kevin and I looked like yesterday when we brought our boat in on the Blish Point ramp, where four tourists from Cincinnati were wandering around the parking lot.

They were clearly lost, and we asked them if we could help them find something. This led to a whole discussion of what to do on Cape Cod and, for what may have been the first time since we moved here two years ago, I felt like a local.

It wasn’t because I knew where to go to eat, or which activities were not to be missed. It was because I was standing on the ramp, next to my grimy working boat with five lobsters in the hold, wearing my stained coveralls.
