Boats get shipshape for Port Huron to Mackinac race
22.07.11
Bill Francis' boat, Solution, survived the furious storms that rolled through the fleet sailing in last weekend's Chicago to Mackinac Race. Those storms left two sailors dead and damaged 45 other boats so badly they had to drop out.
Solution, a Farr 40, will race in Saturday's Bells Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. Francis never considered dropping out. But like most of those racing from Port Huron to Mackinac Island this weekend, he said the storms renewed his respect for the Great Lakes.
"It's a fresh reminder that the wind and sea conditions change rapidly in the Great Lakes, and in any long-distance race, you have to be prepared to deal with the potential of having some high wind conditions," said Francis of Grosse Pointe Park.

Jefferson County STAR team to use commander's boat; county to cover cost and ...
20.07.11
Jefferson County’s Special Tactics and Rescue Team will use commander Mark A. Knowles’s boat and have the county cover the gas and insurance during water rescues and responses.
The team owns an 11-foot inflatable boat with a 20-horsepower motor, Mr. Knowles said, but it’s suitable for rescues only on the Black River and other small bodies of water. His 21-foot, rigid-hulled inflatable boat with 115-hp motor is safer and better for the team’s calls on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
“We have been using it for the last year and a half anyway,” he said. “We’ve always been dependent on another agency, and on the St. Lawrence, with the fireboats that we train with, we’ll still use them, but on the lake, it’s a little different. Depending on the location, we can be stranded on the shoreline.”
