Police are adding another craft to patrol the waters around Nanaimo.
Nanaimo RCMP kicks off its summertime marine enforcement by launching the newest addition to its fleet of patrol craft, a Zodiac Hurricane, just in time for the start of Safe Boating Week (May 19-25).
The rigid hull inflatable, powered by twin 150-horsepower Evinrude outboard motors, will be used to enforce rules and regulations and help improve awareness of the importance of boating safety.
Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said police see the boat as a way to continue building positive relationships with the public.
The vessel is scheduled be on the water during the busiest boating times, especially during weekends and special events.

•�Know your limits; do not attempt a section of river beyond your skill level.
•�Pay attention to weather and water conditions. Wear wool clothing or a wet suit and dress for the water temperature. If the water temperature and air temperature combined total 100 degrees or less, wear protective clothing.
•�Enter cold water slowly.
•�Avoid swimming near boat ramps or in boating areas.
•�Avoid downed trees, snags and confluences.
