Camp Offers Summer Escape to Kids Who Need it Most

For most of the year, 18-year-old Reynaldo Parker has to deal with living in a group home in Bedford—apart from his sister and two younger brothers—while coping with bipolar disorder and depression.

But for six weeks, he’s a little more carefree. He connects with nature. He’s a role model for younger kids who are going through what he has experienced as a ward of the state.

He’s a counselor at Camp Morty, Westchester County’s summer sleep-away camp for boys and girls who live in foster homes or shelters, or receive financial assistance from the county’s Department of Social Services. Over 300 children and teens from all over the county— from Peekskill to Mt. Vernon to Yonkers—attend each summer during six one-week sessions.

Happy campers: York campgrounds foster their own sense of community

They come from all over the country, representing all walks of life, and there's no denying that the folks at the local campgrounds are happy campers.

Whether they're set up at Camp Eaton and Libby's Campground, located on York Street next to Long Sands Beach, down by Cape Neddick Beach at Cape Neddick Campground, or up in the spacious wooded area of Dixon's Campground on Route 1, camping is a favorite way to spend the summer.

"My aunt and uncle had a place up here and I used to come up when I was little. We loved it so much and when I got married we started coming up here with my kids," said Joyce Wholey, of North Chelmsford, Mass., who has been visiting Camp Eaton for 45 years.

Children with Special Needs 'Lose the Training Wheels' at West Hartford Camp

For most children, learning to ride a two-wheeler is a normal rite of passage achieved early in the elementary school years. Some kids learn quickly and easily, while others are not quite as hasty to catch on. Most kids endure a few bruises and scrapes in the process, but eventually the proud parents let go of the back of the bike as their child pedals off down the street with a brand new independence.

For parents of special needs kids, the process can be much more complicated, but for the past six years, the Kiwanis Club of West Hartford has sought to change that by offering its Lose the Training Wheels Bike Camp.

The brochure reads: “Our dream is to empower children with special needs to learn to ride a conventional bike.” In cooperation with West Hartford Leisure Services , the camp is designed to help children with special needs learn to independently ride a two-wheel bicycle.

Here is Sam, asleep in the middle of the living room floor. Sam is such a sweet sweet boy. He hardly ever complains, and if he does, it is super easy to calm him down or figure out what he wants/needs. He also has the tendency to just fall asleep wherever he is when he's tired, which is kinda nice. Max definitely wasn't like that -- Max was a great sleeper, but he definitely had his preferences on WHERE he wanted to sleep. In this photo, lil Max told me he needed to use the potty -- and when that happens in our house, EVERYTHING gets dropped and we RUN to the potty. Gotta take these requests seriously. Sam must've been tired, because when we got back downstairs, this is what we found! It was a short-lived nap, if I recall -- because big brother Max doesn't play too quietly.... Daddy left us for a week to travel to Europe for work (Germany and Denmark). So, I got a sense of what it would be like to do everything all on my own. It wasn't horrible, but is definitely something I do NOT prefer -- it's nice to have someone helping out with bedtime, morning rush, etc. By the end of the week, I think I had everything figured out: lunches packed at night, I showered before bed, the order for showering/baths and bedtime stories, etc. I was exhausted. Sunday morning, we took a walk with our neighbors up to a newer coffee shop/pizzeria up the street from us for coffee and muffins. Lil Max was very excited to eat...
