Pinal sheriff acquiring millions in equipment

The merchandise is made available to more than 17,000 police and sheriff's departments nationwide as a way of improving public safety while saving taxpayer dollars. Last year, nearly $500 million worth of new and used items were distributed by the agency -- more than double what was requisitioned in fiscal 2010.
Federal regulations require the surplus items to be issued and used exclusively for law-enforcement purposes, especially counterdrug and counterterrorism efforts.
Yet the Sheriff's Office, which helps oversee the program in Arizona, has doled out hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of equipment that it never used to non-police agencies and a business, saying the items are merely on "loan" and might occasionally be used to assist deputies.

JEWELL -- In 1997, LeRoy Bourbon started a business with one truck that today boasts a fleet of 19.
After millions of miles of moving farm products, dried distillers grain from ethanol plants and other commodities, LeRoy -- and son Eric -- began brainstorming ways to make trailers stronger and easier to unload.
"We were buying used trailers and fixing them up," LeRoy said.
After rebuilding for roughly a decade, the Bourbons (pronounced BOR-bun) launched their own brand Jan. 1, 2011.
"They knew they could make improved versions," said Angela Waters, Bourbon Trailers' project manager.
Bourbon's hopper-bottomed trailers have no right angles where products are held, making unloading smoother.

Time does fly
I have been enjoying myself with Leverage and White Collar these past couple of months. My relationship with Leverage almost came to a tragic end, when my DVR died and ate all the episodes I had managed to save. Leverage was shown on the crappiest channel we have: ridiculous programming and poor reception, not to mention frequent time shifts. So, I got most of season 1, although not all episodes completely from beginning to end, and some badly pixellated at points. I was going to rewatch them in the intended order rather than broadcast order, but then the equipment failure happened. To my great joy I discovered that Leverage was about to be released on DVD in Region 2, so I ordered it immediately. Several "we are sorry, but the distributor has decided to postpone the release by X weeks" emails later, I finally have the first season in my grabby hands, and will start reacquainting myself with Parker, Hardison, Eliot and Sophie tomorrow evening. I could do without Nate, but the awesomeness of the other four compensates more than adequately. Meanwhile, I watched reruns of Tell Me You Love Me on tv, and became obsessed with Tim DeKay. This could only lead to White Collar, what with so many people enthusing about it. The first season was already available on DVD when I decided I must have. It is a testimony to the lure of DeKay that White Collar is only the second show I have ordered sight unseen, i.e. on the strength of fannish analysis, youtube vids and fic. (The first was SGA.)...
