Questions about repair on a 1987 Evinrude outboard motor?
I have a 1987 115hp outboard Evinrude motor. It is blowing white smoke out of the propeller & leaves a black residue on the ground around the motor. To get it to start, we have to manually open or close the choke.
ricsudukai is right, you need to do a compression test. This might be from to much oil mixed with your fuel......the correct ratio is 50:1, so I'd mix a fresh 6 gal. tank for further test. There is a possibility this is from a rich mixture. The

BRP ends model-year designations for Evinrude outboards
Beginning this month, the date of manufacture will be referenced on the serial number label on each Evinrude outboard engine.
The benefits of model-year elimination include:
• Quicker Product Updates: Consumers will not have to wait for a model-year transition to receive the latest product developments from Evinrude.
• Simplicity: Instead of tracking two model years, one for the boat and one for the engine, Evinrude outboard owners will only have to reference the model year of their boat package.
• Improved Inventory Management: Authorized Evinrude dealers and OEM partners will be able to manage their inventory more effectively and ensure that the most recent Evinrude outboard models are available to their customers.
BRP offers Evinrude retail promotion
Qualified U.S. consumers who purchase and take delivery of eligible Evinrude E-TEC engines from a participating Evinrude dealer will be able to select either special financing or an extended warranty offer:
•Special financing option: Financing as low as 3.9 percent APR for as long as 72 months.
• Extended warranty option: A BRP extended, six-year limited warranty consisting of three years of BRP factory warranty and three years of B.E.S.T. coverage.
