Silver Market Commentary Report for 7/20/2010

The silver initially tried to de-link with the gold market as silver prices at times in the early going were able to claw their way into positive ground. However, in the lead up to the scheduled US data flow, silver and other physical commodity markets came under pressure as if the markets were anticipating some very bearish news from the housing starts and permits data. In the wake of the surprise gain in the US housing permits data, silver and other physical commodity markets appear to mount relief rallies. Given the action today, it would appear that the silver market is still generally tracking its physical commodity market fundamentals.

Gold Market Review Report for 7/20/2010

The gold market started out under pressure Tuesday and surprisingly mostly divergent with the silver market. At least in the early going today a slight rebound in Euro zone flight to quality hopes failed to inspire gold buyers. Later in the Tuesday session the gold market seemed to be lifted by news that US housing permits managed a surprise gain. It is also possible that a recovery in the US equity market in the wake of the data flow inspired buying of gold stocks and that in turn added to the reversal track in the gold market. However, the positive influence of the Housing permits figures seemed to wane a bit in the early afternoon trade and that in turn suggests that gold prices were maintaining a correlation with the US equity markets. News of a mining death at a South African mine probably wasn’t a factor in the gold trade today, as classic physical supply side developments haven’t been given that much credence lately.
