Edgerton student club designs, builds high gas-mileage vehicles

— Although it’s decorated with flaming duct tape and its driver is equipped with a crash helmet, a harness-style seatbelt and a fire extinguisher, the main point is not how fast Edgerton High School’s super vehicle can go.

It’s all about the gas mileage.

With unleaded gasoline topping $3.90 a gallon, the high school’s Supermileage Vehicle Club could be the envy of any driver stuck with a fuel-guzzling pickup truck or SUV.

The eight-member, engineering class/student club, which is in its third year, is finishing work on two gas-powered supermileage vehicles built to compete in two fuel-efficiency competitions this spring.

One of the vehicles, a one-seat, three-wheeled model that students built last year, got 160 mpg in a competition last spring.

'Sculling' Boats Make Way To Rock Sound Homecoming

HAVING christened them at the St Valentine's Day Massacre in Montagu Bay in February, Bahamian Brewery and Beer Company is now taking its four new sculling boats to the Rock Sound Homecoming Celebrations in Eleuthera over the Easter holiday weekend.

On Good Friday, marketing manager Lynden Johnson said they intend to showcase the four boats (Sands Beer, Strong Back Stout, Sands Light and High Rock) - named after the company's products and built by Sheldon Gibson - to a visiting group of 50 persons from South Carolina who will participate in a demonstration race.

Trouble with my Johnson

Once again the Rocky Mountains are alive with the magic of spring, another promise of renewal carried by the warming breezes. But I am sad. My Johnson doesn't work.

It was never much to look at. But my Johnson always seemed to get the job done. Then, last fall, it became unreliable. I never knew if it would work.

Like most guys, I thought I could fix the problem myself. I spent many Saturdays tinkering with my Johnson out in the driveway, even giving it a solid whack with a hammer now and then. It would roar to life for a few seconds and then, well, nothing.

As you'd imagine, messing around with your Johnson in the driveway doesn't exactly get you any good-neighbor awards. So, after much fussing and being unwilling to spend the rest of my life with an erratic Johnson, I decided to haul it into a certified outboard motor repair shop.
