Boaters taking to the water weeks early

Warm weather seems to have trumped concerns about high fuel prices, with central Illinois boaters taking to the water weeks early this spring.
“You might as well get out and use your boat while the weather is nice,” said Scott Tucker, sales manager of the Lake Springfield Marina . “And people have definitely taken advantage of it.”
Fishermen barely had an off-season this winter.
“This winter has been very conducive to people getting out, and it’s the fishermen primarily,” said Steven Poe, owner of Eastside Marine , 2525 North Grand Ave. E. “But there have been people water-skiing already on Lake Springfield.”

Missing NS fisherman presumed drowned

A fisherman from Eastern Passage, N.S., is presumed to have drowned after the fishing boat he was in capsized Friday, RCMP say.
Brent Walton, 33, and another man were crossing near Lake Charlotte on the province's eastern shore, when their three-metre boat with an outboard motor began experiencing mechanical difficulty. The boat overturned around 12 p.m. Friday.
The other man, a 29-year-old from Halifax Regional Municipality, swam 200 metres to shore to call for help.
RCMP, Police Dog Service, the fire department and search and rescue crews from the area searched extensively late into the night, but found no trace of the other man .
"They searched all around the lake hoping that [he] made it to shore, but at this time he's presumed drowned," said Staff Sgt. Bruce Webb.

Treasure Coast powerboat races motor toward green-flag start

YESTERYEAR
For 17 years, the Sailfish Regatta were an annual event eagerly anticipated by Treasure Coast residents. The majority of the races took place on the Indian River Lagoon at the Stuart Causeway. The final few races were at Jensen Beach Causeway. A few in the early 1980s took place in the St. Lucie River between Lighthouse Point on the western shore and the marinas along Dixie Highway on the eastern shore.
The Sertoma Club was the last group to produce inshore powerboat races locally. Proceeds generated from the races were used to support many local charities. In 1996, club officials reluctantly announced that permitting requirements and production expenses had made it impossible for them to continue producing the races.
