What physics topics can be discussed concerning power boats?
Apr 22, 2010 by student1 | Posted in Physics
I am working on a physics project in which I have to discuss different topics (in physics) that deal with power boats. I can go into detail on the friction of water, velocity, etc., but I was looking for more in-depth details and more interesting concepts.

NZ Offshore Powerboats clash at the capital
31.12.69
'Fairview', the leading Superboat with four out of five races won will be looking for another victory in Wellington this week. Warren Lewis and his co driver Andrew Koolen have another psychological hurdle ahead of them going into this race as Warren was in the boat in a previous race when he tripped on a wave and barrel rolled the boat. He was incredibly lucky to land the boat up the right way and continue racing, but he, more than anyone on the course, will be well aware of just how dangerous and unpredictable this race can be. With Fairview only 300 points ahead of them 'Fujitsu Better Heat' driven by Tony Coleman and Chris Hanley will be well aware that they need to win inSource: BYM News (press release)
McConaghy Boats aids James Cameron's Deepsea Challenge
31.12.69
The 24 ft (7.3 m) tall, 11.8 ton DEEPSEA CHALLENGER has three main sections. The beam, the biggest single component, is made of a new kind of foam that provides both flotation and a strong structural core. The pilot sphere is slung below the beam, and below that an array of scientific gear stands ready to deploy at the bottom.
About 70% of the submarine’s volume is taken up by syntactic foam. This is formed of millions of hollow glass microspheres suspended in an epoxy resin and is the only flotation material that can stand up to the incredible pressures in the deep ocean. The new type of syntactic foam developed for this project is called ISOFLOAT™ and has been patented.

Truex Jr. racing remote-control boats in Alabama
31.12.69
On his way to this weekend’s NASCAR race in Texas, Truex stopped in Huntsville, Ala., for the Huntsville Model Boat Association’s Spring Forward Record Trials from Monday-Wednesday.
Using boats he has built himself, Truex already owns three International Model Power Boat Association records, according to his NASCAR team, Michael Waltrip Racing: one-third mile Nitro D-Class oval (69.938 mph/17.158 seconds); one-third mile Nitro B-Class oval (66.312 mph/18.096 seconds); and one-quarter mile Nitro D-Class oval (60.492 mph/14.878 seconds).
“This week I am going for three new records,” Truex said in quotes provided Monday by MWR. “I currently own one of them, but I want to lower it because I know I can. I am also going to try and go after a straightline record, which is a straightaway speed. The record I am trying to beat with a little 3.5cc engine is 103 mph. My goal is to go at least 105 mph.”

Visit with Kimberly Pauley
With vampire boyfriend George and best friend Serena by her side, Mina thought she had her whole life—or rather afterlife—ahead of her. But then Mina’s parents drop a bomb. They’re moving. To Louisiana. And not somewhere cool like New Orleans, but some teeny, tiny town where cheerleaders and jocks rule the school. Mina has to fake her death, change her name, and leave everything behind, including George and Serena. Not even the Vampire Council’s shape-shifting classes can cheer her up. Then Serena shows up on Mina’s doorstep with some news that sends Mina reeling. Mina may look a lot better with fangs, but her afterlife isn’t any less complicated! Oh that’s hard! A lot of the characters that I really love aren’t necessarily people that I’d want to spend the day with. Erm…how about Mary Poppins? But the real one from PL Travers? Even though she wasn’t all sweetness and light like the Disney version, it would still be a magical day. And who can resist that?
