MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Twice-a-day therapy is planned for an 8-year-old boy injured in a sailboat accident earlier this month.
Isaiah Risland of Leonard is undergoing physical, speech and occupational therapy, according to his aunts.
“Isaiah is getting stronger every day,” wrote Tia Wallin, an aunt, in an entry Monday for Isaiah’s CaringBridge journal. “The doctor said (Monday) morning that his kidney, liver, and pancreas are all working very well and function very closely to the normal levels.”
The different types of therapy are designed to help Isaiah regain his pre-accident functions.
Physical therapy focuses on large motor skills, and Isaiah performed leg and foot stretches and stood up with assistance, Wallin said.

Salvage crew headed to Farallon Islands to remove stranded sailboat

A helicopter lifted a wrecked sailboat off one of the Farallon Islands on Monday, 10 days after it was tossed around by rogue waves, killing five crew members.
A small helicopter landed on the southeast island of the Farallon chain around 4 p.m. After members of the salvage team rigged the boat, a larger helicopter equipped with a crane lifted the wreckage and brought it to the Half Moon Bay Airport.
Ballard Diving and Salvage of Seattle had received approval Monday to remove the boat — the Low Speed Chase — according to a source close to the operation who asked to remain anonymous. The complete operation is expected to cost $200,000.
The yacht had been attempting to round the rocky bird sanctuary, located 28 miles off the coast of San Francisco, on April 14 when it was struck by a large wave that swept five of its eight crew members overboard. The three remaining sailors were trying to maneuver the boat to rescue them when the Low Speed Chase was hit by a second wave that washed two more members overboard and broke the leg of the remaining crew member. The boat then quickly washed onto the rocks.

Outdoors notebooK: Gallott tops Paddlers; FPYC calling for women skippers

The annual DOA Lures Paddlers Only fishing tournament was beset by a frightening weather forecast Saturday, however, the worst wind and rain conditions never materialized.
A field of 121 anglers fished Treasure Coast waters aboard kayaks with DOA artificial lures for the longest combined total inches of snook, trout and redfish.
Fort Pierce angler Bob Gallott recorded the event's lone slam consisting of all three species measuring 67 inches. He caught, measured, photographed and released a 29-inch snook on a DOA Cal jig paddle tail in Arkansas Glow color, a 21-inch redfish on the Cal shad tail in Fiji chicken color and a 17-inch trout on the 4-inch jerk bait in watermelon red color. All his fish were caught on the flats north of North Causeway in Fort Pierce and east of the Intracoastal Waterway channel.
