What does the gas mask symbolize for Green Days record 21st Century Breakdown?
I just bought this Green Day shirt with a guy wearing a gas mask, and i get that Christian and Gloria are the Gas Mask Lovers but why gas masks? what does it stand for?

Canada eyes mask-wearing demonstrators
Canada's federal government and two riot-stricken cities are considering making it illegal for demonstrators to wear masks at violent protests.Alberta Conservative Member of Parliament Blake Richards announced his private member's bill Sunday that could result in five years in prison or a fine of up to $5,000 for a rioter caught wearing a mask.
Beginning in June 2010 when masked rioters breaking from a demonstration against a Group of 20 summit in Toronto torched and smashed the downtown core, demonstrations have increasingly turned violent.
Last June, masked rioters led an alcohol-fuelled crowd of thousands on a rampage that caused millions of dollars in damages in Vancouver after the hometown Canucks lost the Stanley Cup.
Gas Masks Scarce for Israelis, Abundant for NYC Stoners
If you are an adventurous New Yorker who is adequately prepared for the zombie apocalypse and who also enjoys weed, you may have used a gas mask/bong combo. If you haven’t…you definitely should. It will either be the best experience of your life or the worst. It could also be both.
These bong masks are a prime example of one of the greatest dichotomies of stoner life: despite the fact that we are all lazy fuckers, we will go to incredibly complicated, outlandish and ingenious lengths to get really, really stoned.
The gas mask/bong combos can be found on the major thoroughfares in New York City: St. Mark’s Place, Union Square; basically any street with more than one falafel restaurant or a 2 Bros Pizza. They are, depending on the mood of the person selling them to you and how expensive your clothing looks, relatively cheap and easy to find. This fact makes it surprising to learn that in Israel, where the bong-less gas masks are used by civilians to actually filter dangerous gas (rather than imbibe it), there is a shortage of the masks.
In new documentary, snapshots of photojournalists on the job
Tara Todras-Whitehill, one of the 12 photojournalists featured in the documentary "Deadline Every Second," has a unique perspective on luck."I think I've been pretty lucky so far," she says over the film's opening images of her clad in a flak jacket, helmet and gas mask in the West Bank town of Ramallah, photographing Palestinian protesters clashing with Israeli soldiers. "I've had a couple, like, concussion grenades go off at my feet, but that didn't affect me."
Todras-Whitehill goes on to explain, rather matter-of-factly, how she deals with rubber bullets, tear gas and unruly crowds. She adds, "You sort of have to decide how important the picture is," but one gets the sense that for her and her peers it's always pretty important.
Dog poop saves the world
Dog owners supply the fuel through an unobtrusive feeder in the middle of a public dog-friendly park near MIT's campus in Cambridge, Mass. The fuel powers, for the time being, just one lamp. In theory, if people (and their pooches) cooperate, it could be an eternal flame. The real purpose of the project isn't just to light up a small piece of an urban park. From the project's website:
This is a chance to be good to the planet, and to also start to think how we could relate to each other in new unexplored ways, such as using the flame made from dog waste to boil water for coffee, focusing the light to create a projector, baking bread, power a street light on a dark corner, or whatever else comes to mind.
This public urban intervention questions both global and local issues, and at the same time creates local responses to issues of sustainability and lifestyle choices. Feeding dog waste into the public digester turns these actions into something much more critical, visual, and participatory.
The Park Spark Project is about bringing people together to brainstorm, build, and explore solutions and dialogue around the issues brought to light by the project involving science, public involvement, ecological issues, community building, artists’ sensibilities, and bringing criticality to a space.
Although it's not exactly in Cami and Harry's usual walking territory, I think I can arrange to have them contribute to the project.
