When do firefighters ware (i dont know if i spelled that right) the gasmask/helmet?

it seems like in movies, pictures and even descriptic books that most firefighters dont ware that protective... i guess you would call it a gasmask? whatever, well when do they ware it? when the need arrives? why wouldnt you always ware it in a huge blazing

You are talking about a SCBA or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. Its pure air. Not oxygen and not gas, since both of the elements are flammable. We use it anytime we enter a structure where there is smoke. I have only taken it off to supply my patient
