Smoke rings

Hookahs—and specialty lounges for smoking them—are gaining popularity locally
Craig Ross sits in an armchair and emits a perfect smoke ring from his mouth, like the Caterpillar in “Alice in Wonderland.” In his left hand is a thin hose attached to a nearby hookah, on the other side of which sits his friend Kern Haney.
Both Maine natives, Ross and Haney met at a hookah bar in Portland. For years, they bounced around the idea of starting their own hookah lounge. They fulfilled that dream last July, when they opened The Wolf and the Raven in downtown Somersworth. The business is open to ages 18 and up.
The lounge has close to 20 hookahs on hand for customers to use, along with an array of flavored tobaccos called shishas. Guests can relax on a couch, play board games or cards with friends, and share a hookah packed with sweet-tasting shisha.
