Mid-American Canoe Race draws veterans, novices
23.02.98
With water rushing against their paddles and songbirds in the canopy of trees in Mount St. Mary’s Park, hundreds of canoeists cast off for a voyage along the Fox River.
“This is our inaugural adventure, said Mike Roggeman of North Aurora
On Sunday, the Fox Valley Park District hosted its 50th annual Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race with starts in St. Charles and Batavia for 10- and 6-mile trips down the prettiest stretches of the river, ending at McCullough Park in Aurora.
The race featured some 700 racers — avid, novice and newcomers —with as many different reasons for participating in the race as there are makes and colors of boats. The cloud cover kept temperatures in the 70s, until the sun peeked through two hours into the race. Participants noted the river levels had subsided since last week’s heavy rains, but they were high enough to keep boats from scraping the bottom.

CableLabs Recaps VOD Advertising Interop
23.02.34
CableLabs and Canoe Ventures ended up attracting 10 suppliers to an interop event held last month to test standards-based dynamic video-on-demand advertising, as part of Canoe's efforts to establish a national VOD ad footprint.
The May 23-27 event at CableLabs' Louisville, Colo., headquarters was aimed at demonstrating the latest SCTE-130 and Stewardship and Fulfillment Interfaces (SaFI) 2.1 advanced-advertising specifications. SCTE-130 defines communication among advanced ad components, while SaFI is a CableLabs/Canoe-developed suite of specs to define different attributes for interactive, VOD and addressable advertising across multiple operators.
Participants in the interop were: Ad-ID LLC, Arris, Avail-TVN, Canoe, Ericsson, Harris, Nielsen, Sigma Systems, S&T, This Technology and Unisoft. Several other notable VOD and advertising vendors -- including Cisco Systems, SeaChange International, Motorola, OpenTV and BlackArrow -- did not attend.

The Hampton Bays Civic and Beautification Associations have announced they will host a meeting with the developers of the Canoe Place in property and their architect Scott Pollack, the Boston-based architect involved with the proposed Canoe Place Inn restoration.
According to Dr. Bruce King, president of the Hampton Bays Civic Association, the civic group invited the developers to make a presentation on June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Hampton Bays High School auditorium in anticipation of a large crowd.
Canoe Place Inn has been an issue of contention in the community for sometime. Most recently, the developers of the Canoe Place inn project, Gregg and Mitchell Rechler of R Squared LLC, appeared before the Southampton town board for a pre-submission work session to discuss their plans for the site.
