Man acquitted in stolen canoe case
17.05.11
WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock man was found not guilty May 3 of possessing stolen property after a provincial court judge ruled there wasn't enough evidence for a conviction.
Benjamin Ian Watson, 22, was charged with possession of a stolen canoe belonging to Roger Pickel of Millville on or about May 6, 2010.
Pickel bought the canoe in Old Town, Maine, for $799 in April 2010. He took it out with his brother Dale and left it at his brother's residence on Lower Main Street.
He said he believed he last saw it on May 3, 2010, on a canoe rack before his sister-in-law Jackie Pickel telephoned him to ask if he had retrieved his canoe. He told her he hadn't, and it was established then that the canoe had been stolen.

Modern luxuries in a rustic environment
05.06.11
Memorial weekend camping has become an annual tradition for our family. My in-laws started it about 8 years ago and we've tagged along for the last 4 years. The goal is to camp somewhere near the vicinity of Columbia County so we can go tubing down the ice-cold Ichetucknee spring-fed river on the Sunday before Memorial Day.
We headed into the weekend with my son's recent diagnosis of strep throat. He didn't want infection to get in the way of a family entertainment so, after 3 full doses of Amoxicillin, he said he was feeling better. I could see that, if we didn't go, he was ready to hurl himself into a deep abyss of depression.
We packed the Rav 4 beyond capacity bringing "necessities" such as laptops and extra pillows that did little more than take up space. We also packed my daughter's toddler mattress which my husband wisely wedged between the 2 back seats, effectively creating a barrier that separated the children and significantly cut down on their sibling bickering. The silence was intoxicating and the 4 hour trip turned out to be rather peaceful and relatively free of annoyances.
