Exhibit To Lure Visitors To Heald Home

Most collectors find one subject and obsess over it. Ollie Hibbeler obsessed over many subjects.
"He had the disease we call collecting," said his daughter Cheryl Hibbeler.
Ollie Hibbeler's collection of antique fishing lures and tackle will be on display from 1 to 4 p.m. June 12, in the historic Darius Heald Home at Fort Zumwalt Park in O'Fallon.
The display is being presented in conjunction with Family Fishing Day, a free event sponsored by the O’Fallon Parks and Recreation Department. From 8 a.m. to noon, children ages 5 to 12 and their families can take part in a morning of catch-and-release fishing at Lake Whetzel. A variety of other activities will also take place, including worm races, a casting contest and a reel race.

Angle for those yellow perch
23.02.47
A little over a year ago I wrote a few lines on fishing for yellow perch, a fish that everyone can catch. Now that is no fish tale.
After doing some research on the yellow perch, I found that they are a popular fish in the Northeast and the Great Lakes areas. In checking further I found that all states that border California list record perch caught in their particular state. California does not list a record yellow perch. For example, Oregon lists a 2 pound 2 ounce record. Nevada lists a 1 pound 8 ounce fish. Arizona lists a 1 pound 10 ounce fish. Most of those records measure about 13 to 16 inches.
For some reason we are not quite sure of but suspect is that California might not want them around as they might be a problem with native species. So wildlife authorities keep them at bay in the north state, specifically Iron Gate and Copco lakes. They have been listed "sunfish" in the fishing regulations, which might be in error as they are not from the sunfish family. The yellow perch is in the same family as the walleye and sauger found mostly in the Midwest and Eastern states. The record perch is listed at 4.2 pounds. Where caught is unknown. I would not doubt that there are probably record perch by weight in Iron Gate or Copco lakes. I have observed many around 12 inches or more.
